Mercy Heart Hospital was relatively quiet at that moment. There were presently no emergencies that demanded immediate attention and the staff seemed to be rather complacent, going about their regular duties without any sort of urgency. As they busied themselves, no one noticed the violet light shine brightly from beneath the door to the supply closet.
Peyton and Eve now stood in the relative darkness of the closet, surrounded by shelves lined with various medical supplies. Peyton looked around and immediately recognized the place, knowing it was the very same hospital that she worked in.
“Why did we come here?” she asked Eve.
“It was the first place I thought of,” Eve admitted. “I have to go get this blood off me before I start spreading the disease. I want you to stay here. When the sick start coming in, do not get any fluids on your skin. Wear protective clothing.”
“I thought you said there was nothing we could do for them?” Peyton asked.
“There isn’t,” Eve replied. “But I know someone who might be able to do something. The Angel of Healing, Raphael. You just do what you can for the sick when they start coming in, and they very soon will, in extremely large numbers. I’ll be back with Raphael as soon as I can.”
“Eve,” Peyton began. “The Angel Travis was talking about. Dimme? When he said her name, you looked… scared. Who is she?”
Eve hesitated. “I’ve never met her,” she admitted. “But I’ve been told stories. For young Angels, such as myself, she is something like the Boogeyman. A true monster.”
“What is she planning?” Peyton asked. “Why release a disease like this?”
“She has done it before,” Eve replied. “Before Earth was born, before this universe was even a thought, she laid waste to countless people. Her father was the ruler of Angels, but a horrible tyrant. He sought only power and Dimme did his bidding. At his command, she destroyed entire planets. She knows how to kill, how to destroy, how to cause untold pain and suffering.” Eve thought for a moment, then added darkly, “She’s very good at it.”
“Michael thinks she’s here for my soul,” Peyton said. “If that’s true, why would she create an epidemic in the city she knows I live in? Wouldn’t she risk killing me before she can take my soul?”
“I can’t pretend to understand the way she thinks,” Eve said. “All I know is what I’ve been told. And what I’ve been told is she is vicious, cruel, sadistic and ruthless. She can lay waste to entire cities in an instant. She feeds on the flesh of children. She simply loves to see pain and feel pain. However, I do see your point. It is a risky move. If I hadn’t shielded you from the… from the blast, then you could very well be infected right now.”
“If she doesn’t want my soul, then what does she want?” Peyton asked.
“It could just be about revenge,” Eve thought aloud. “When my father created this universe for us all to live in, he did so without the knowledge of Dimme’s father, Abzu.
